Malaysia-Singapore high-speed rail project regeneration variables Malaysian government decided to build high-speed rail alone

According to news from the Malaysian online media “Free Malaysia Today” on the 25th, the Malaysian government has decided to build a high-speed rail separately. The new plan will not involve Singapore. The high-speed rail will only connect Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Singapore will no longer be one of the terminals. .

In this regard, the Ministry of Transport of Singapore reiterated that the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur high-speed rail project is beneficial to both Singapore and Malaysia. Therefore, it will do its best to complete negotiations with the Malaysian government before the deadline for the end of this year. If the contract period expires and the Malaysian side decides not to continue to implement the Xinlong high-speed rail plan, the Malaysian side may compensate Singapore for the cost of fulfilling the obligations of the agreement as agreed.

The Ministry of Transport of Singapore pointed out that the Singapore-Longdon High Speed Rail bilateral agreement signed between Singapore and Malaysia in December 2016 is a legally binding international agreement that is still valid today.

After the Malaysian regime changed in 2018, the then Pakatan Harapan government and the Singapore government agreed to shelve the high-speed rail plan for two years. Malaysia again requested an extension in May this year, and Singapore also agreed to extend the deadline for the last time, delaying the project by seven months to December 31.

The Xinlong high-speed railway is expected to start construction in 2020 and be completed before 2031. After opening to traffic, it only takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by high-speed rail.
